What is a "Comp Card"?
Think of a comp card as a business card for models. Comp cards have been around for many years and are one of the most important marketing tools for models and actors. They are also commonly referred to as Zed Cards, Sed Cards, Composite Cards or Agency Cards. Comp cards are an inexpensive way for models to promote themselves to modeling agencies and their clients.
Comp Card Format
Comp cards contain photos of the model and information about the models physical stats – for women (bust, waist, hips) and for men (suit or chest, waist, inseam), shoe size, eye and hair color and date of birth. A comp card usually has a headshot on the front, and a series of 3 or 4 photos from a models portfolio on the back. A comp card would also have the model’s name and contact information. The standard comp card size is A5 or 5.5×8.5″ inches.
What kind of photos should I use on my comp card?
Well that depends. If you are working with a modeling agency, a lot of times, they will tell you what type of photos they would like to see on your cards. Some models have a different set of comp cards for different style shoots, such as fitness or swimwear. Depending on the casting call they are going to, they will choose which cards to bring with them. If you're unsure of what types of photos to use, try going with a variety of different poses or styles.
One thing you should always try to do is make sure that you are using high resolution, professional photos. The quality of your photos will determine the quality of your comp card. If you have low resolution photos, there's a great chance that the quality of the final comp card print will be sacrificed. If you have low resolution files, it's possible the photographer just sent them to you as previews or proofs. You should be able to contact the photographer to request high resolution versions. Sometimes your photographer will store them on a cloud service, such as Dropbox, or Google Drive, and may have sent you a link to download them.
Are comp cards and headshots the same thing?
Headshots and comp cards are not the same thing. Headshots are an 8.5x11", single sided, photo with only the models name printed on the bottom. Headshots are sometimes printed with a white border so that notes can be written in the margins. A models resumé will sometimes be stapled to the back of the headshot.
